Frequently Asked Questions
Is there really a difference between European Roulette and French Roulette?

Absolutely. At first glance, the only difference you may see is that the betting terms in French Roulette are in French, which hardly justifies it being considered a different game. However, the important difference lies in one very small rule that is present in French Roulade. It is called the La Partage rule and it states that if the ball stops on 0, then half of all even-money bets are returned to players. This of course lowers the house edge, making it more attractive to players. In all other ways, the games are the same, but it is a very important difference. Incidentally, American Roulette has a higher house edge thanks to the additional ‘00’ segment on the wheel but it compensates for this with more betting options.

Why are there so many different versions of Blackjack?

If you are not a regular Blackjack player then it is understandable if you are confused as to why there are so many different games on offer. Firstly, all of the games are based upon the same principle and have the same aim, to beat the dealer by building a hand that is closer to 21 than the dealer’s is but without exceeding 21. However, there are subtle differences between each variant and these differences have a big impact on how the game should be played. One of the big differences is in the number of decks used, it can be anything from 1 to 8, and this of course effects the probability of what cards will be dealt. There are also differences in the rules governing Double Down and Split. You will find details about the difference in the individual games’ rules, and it is important to be aware of them when building your strategy. Of course, some versions of Blackjack are significantly different, such as Blackjack Double Exposure and Blackjack Switch, and these can be a huge amount of fun to explore.

Is there really a difference between Classic and Video Slots?

Originally, there was a very marked difference between the two; Classic Slots had 3 reels, very few paylines and almost no bonus features, while Video Slots had 5 reels, many paylines, and numerous features. However, today, the distinction is not quite as clear-cut. While a Classic Slot will still usually have just three reels, today many of them will offer a variety of bonus features and some of them can be very involved (beyond bonus spins and picking games). However, if you are looking for traditional fruit machine style games, then the Classic Slots section is where you will find them.

How do slot machines work?

Understanding the structure of a slot machine is key to understanding how to play; fortunately, it is very simple. You will notice that there are vertical strips of symbols, these are called reels and they are what spin when you start the machine. On most slot machines, there are three rows of symbols visible at any given time (however, this is not fixed). This means, that if a slot machine has five reels, a total of fifteen symbols are visible at any time. If you trace a path through these symbols, from the left most reel to the right most, then that is what is known as a payline. The aim is to land matching symbols along these paylines, on consecutive reels (so that there are no gaps), and if there are enough symbols, then you win a payout. The above is true for the vast majority of slot machines, but there are of course some exceptions. For example, there is a style of slot known as an Arcade Slot. Rather than using traditional reels, these games use a grid of symbols and the aim is to land clusters of matching symbols. Even with traditional machines, it is not always that simple. While it is most common for symbols to have to land from left to right along a payline, some games have bidirectional paylines (meaning that combinations can also land from right to left), and other games allow winning combinations to start from any reel, not just the first. Because of all of these differences, it is important to first look at a slot machine’s rules before playing, so you know exactly how it works.

What does volatility mean in regards to slot machines?

When people talk of slot volatility they are talking about the way in which a game pays out. If a slot is low volatility (sometimes also called variance), then it means that it will pay out small amounts on a regular basis. If a slot is high volatility then it pays out larger amounts less often. There are also mid-volatility games, which fall somewhere between the two. A slot’s volatility does not reflect your chances of winning, but it is worth being aware of. For instance, if you have a small bankroll and want to play a large number of spins then a low volatility slot will be the better choice as it will help keep your bankroll topped up.

What is an RTP?

RTP stands for Return to Player. It is a theoretical percentage of money put into a game that will come back to players over time. For example, if a game has an RTP of 95% then for every £100 bet on it, £95 will be returned to players. However, there are a few things you need to remember. First, in the case of slot machines, the RTP is calculated over a vast number of spins, so it doesn’t mean that the money will be returned to you specifically. Second, in the case of card and table games, the RTP relies on players using perfect strategy, which is not easy and very few players achieve it. Nonetheless, the RTP is a good thing to know when deciding what game to play.
